Ing-Ing’s Story
Ing-Ing moved to the United States when she was fourteen years old. Her parents send her to the United States so she could speak perfect English. When she first arrived in New York, she was very happy. She liked the tall buildings and shops in the big city. However, after school started, Ing-Ing became sad, The teacher was always saying something that she could not follow. Her classmates tried to talk to her but Ing-Ing could not understand them. Ing-Ing used to be a smart and popular student in school. Here she was nobody. She was even too scared to talk to anyone.
One day Ing-Ing sat in the school library feeling sorry for herself. She said to herself, “My parents thought it would be easy for me to learn English in the U.S., but it’s very difficult. What should I do?” Suddenly, she heard a voice from behind her. It said, “Maybe you should read some easier books first.” Ing-Ing turned around. It was her English teacher! The English teacher introduces to her some children’s books with beautiful pictures. She also taught her to look up new words in the dictionary.
Those books were very interesting. Ing-Ing could finish several books in a day. Ing-Ing felt more and more comfortable with the English language. Very soon, Ing-Ing was again a smart and popular student in her new school and could speak perfect English!
